Sweetwater Sound: Fort Wayne's Music Landmark and How to Visit |
From a Volkswagen bus in 1979 to a Fort Wayne campus with a store, tours and a live music pavilion |

Many Fort Wayne families know Sweetwater as the big music building on U.S. 30 West, whether or not anyone in the house plays an instrument.
Sweetwater describes itself as the nation's leading music technology and musical instrument retailer, and it all began right here in town.
This guide pulls together what is publicly listed about the campus, the tours and the live music, so you can plan a visit with confidence.
A story that started in a Volkswagen bus
According to the company's own history, founder Chuck Surack started Sweetwater in 1979 as a recording studio in Fort Wayne.
In the early days, he recorded local bands from the back of a Volkswagen bus.
A regional news profile reports that the bus now sits in the lobby of the company's headquarters.
The same profile notes that keeping Sweetwater in Fort Wayne has long been important to Surack.
Local coverage has also noted that Chuck and Lisa Surack support many community organizations, including the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.
The company set up its website in 1994, according to a 2019 CNN profile, and its history lists Sweetwater.com among its innovations.
What you can see and do
The Sweetwater Music Store features a guitar gallery, a drum room, an orchestra gallery and on-site demo rooms, according to Visit Fort Wayne.
You do not need to play an instrument to enjoy a walk through the gear on display.
The campus also offers free tours through Sweetwater's concierge service.
Visit Fort Wayne describes the tour as a look at the distribution center, recording studios, sales department and performance theater.
Its tour guide lists tours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m., limited to 20 people, with advance arrangements by phone or email.
Because tour schedules can change, please confirm the details with the concierge before you plan around them.
The Performance Theatre hosts clinics, presentations and community events, and Sweetwater says it also serves as a place for employee training and family movie nights.

The Sweetwater Performance Pavilion
The Pavilion is a covered outdoor music venue on the south end of the campus.
Its features include a custom-designed sound system by Sweetwater, free on-site parking and air-conditioned restrooms.
Food, soft drinks, beer and wine are available for purchase.
This year's lineup included Clint Black on May 28, Sawyer Brown on June 20 and Switchfoot on Sept. 17, according to ticketing listings.
The summer season has wrapped up, so keep an eye on the Pavilion's website for next year's announcements.
Questions about the venue can go to (260) 432-8176, ext. 1137.
A modern nod to the original bus
Sweetwater recently made news for a new project that echoes its beginnings.
Mix magazine reported on Oct. 14 that the company unveiled the Sweetwater Airstream in May, billed as a fully immersive Dolby Atmos mobile recording studio.
The report says employees began discussing ways to honor the early days ahead of the company's 50th anniversary.
It was designed with acoustic work by Russ Berger Design Group, whose president previously spent eight years at Sweetwater and led the team that built its in-house studios.
The Airstream was not pitched as a retail product, so this is a story to enjoy rather than something to shop for.
The campus is also home to Sweetwater Studios, a multi-room recording facility that carries on the company's roots as a studio.
Planning your visit
Sweetwater is at 5501 U.S. Highway 30 West in Fort Wayne, and the main phone number is (260) 432-8176.
The Pavilion's website lists store hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
A separate Sweetwater campus page lists slightly different weekend hours, so it is wise to confirm before you go.
Plan extra time if you want to browse the store, take a tour and catch a lunchtime performance in the Crescendo Club, which Visit Fort Wayne has described as part of the visit.
Sweetwater also describes GearFest as a two-day gathering of music lovers on its Fort Wayne campus, so check its website for upcoming dates.
If you are bringing visitors from out of town, the campus can be an easy stop to pair with other Fort Wayne attractions.
Families with children may enjoy the arcade games that Visit Fort Wayne has mentioned among the campus amenities.
Parking is listed as free at the Pavilion, but store parking details were not listed on the pages reviewed for this article.
As always, details such as tours, performances and hours can change, so the official Sweetwater pages are the best final check.
Whether you play an instrument or simply enjoy a good story, Sweetwater is a Fort Wayne original worth knowing. |
