Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and the weekend around it is full of events that go well beyond candy.

Here is a look at family-friendly and grown-up options from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1, based on event calendars and local reporting.

Friday, Oct. 30

Trunk-or-treating starts Friday, according to the Waynedale News.

Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, 6424 Winchester Road, and D.O. McComb & Sons, 6301 Fairfield Ave., each host from 5 to 7 p.m.

Santos Tacos and Joanna's Family Restaurant, 3720 W. Jefferson Blvd., begins its trunk-or-treat at 6 p.m.

For a night out, Little Shop of Horrors wraps its run at Three Rivers Music Theatre, 416 W. Fourth St.

The Journal Gazette's calendar lists 8 p.m. shows Friday and Saturday and a 6 p.m. show Sunday, with tickets at $25 for adults and $20 for students.

Saturday, Oct. 31

Families can start the day at the Fort Wayne Zoo, where Zoolooween ends with No Tricks, Just Treats from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fort Wayne Ballet's Family Series presents Spooky Kooky at the Auer Center, a Halloween dance party where children can come in costume and trick-or-treat through the building.

The Ballet's season announcement lists three performances on Halloween, with tickets at $16 for adults and $14 for children 12 and younger.

Showtimes were not confirmed, so check with the Ballet before you go.

In New Haven, Downtown Halloween on Historic Broadway runs from 4 to 6 p.m.

Fort Wayne's official trick-or-treat hours are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Waynedale News also lists a Halloween-themed robotics competition called Monster Match at Wayne High School, where 32 high school teams are scheduled to compete.

Quilters can watch a mystery-quilt reveal at Born Again Quilts, 4005 S. Wayne Ave., beginning at 11 a.m.

Sunday, Nov. 1: Día de los Muertos

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art hosts its Día de los Muertos Family Celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Visit Fort Wayne lists the gallery exhibition, traditional dancing, children's activities, live music and folkloric characters, along with complimentary baked goods, a cash bar and a Mexican food truck.

Admission is free, and parking is $5 per car in the lot directly north of the museum.

The holiday, observed Nov. 1 and 2, is centered on honoring the lives of ancestors, WFFT has reported.

Tips for the weekend

Several Saturday events overlap, so pick one daytime anchor and build the rest of your plans around it.

Not every event is meant for every age, and Visit Fort Wayne's scare-scale guide sorts October events by intensity.

Its Halloween guide lists more family options.

Times, prices and parking details can change, so confirm with each organizer before you go.
